Rand Richards Author and Publisher
After previous careers as a private investigator, insurance claims adjustor, advertising executive, college professor, and publishers' sales rep, Rand Richards returned to his first love, history. Always fascinated by San Francisco's colorful history, in 1991, after three years of research and writing, Rand came out with his first book, Historic San Francisco: A Concise History and Guide and established Heritage House Publishers to bring it to market. The book has been a local bestseller ever since. It has gone through ten printings and has sold more than 40,000 copies. Since then Rand has come out with three other titles: Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City's Past; Haunted San Francisco: Ghost Stories From the City's Past; and his newest title, released in 2009, Mud, Blood, and Gold: San Francisco in 1849.
Rand Richards has a B.A. degree in History from the University of Minnesota, and an MBA degree from San Francisco State University. He is a member of the California Historical Society, the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, and the San Francisco History Association. The latter organization recently awarded him their Oscar Lewis Award for his contributions to knowledge of San Francisco history. Rand was also just honored with an "Award of Merit" by the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society at a luncheon at the Palace Hotel on November 18, 2010 "for distinguished contributions to the collection, preservation and interpretation of San Francisco history."
Rand is a well known speaker and has lectured on aspects of the City's history to audiences from the historical societies noted above as well as many other groups. A few of those include The Native Daughters of the Golden West, the Victorian Alliance, the Mechanics Institute and Library, the Rotary Club, and Elderhostel.
"Your presentation on Mud, Blood, and Gold was fantastic. I appreciated your professionalism and connecting with the ladies. I must say you made me look good by having you as a speaker." -- Diane Hesselgren, Vice President/Programs, Burlingame/Hillsborough Newcomers Club, April 7, 2010.
If you would like to have Rand as a speaker for your organization please email him at rand@heritagehousesf.com or call (415) 776-3156.
